What to expect from therapy

Most people come to counselling motivated by some internal or external factor or relationship in their lives that they need help sorting out and getting a handle on. This can come in the form of a personal crisis, relationship issue, challenges at work or school life, or life transitions such as divorce, retirement, care-giving role, or death.

Many people who seek counselling are looking for ways to feel better and finding solutions to current issues. As a therapist, I help them find and develop tools they need to change and live a life they enjoy more fully.

I work with individuals and family members. My down-to-earth approach allows you to be at ease in a comfortable setting. A therapist’s role should engage with the client while actively listening and be fully present with information the client is sharing.

The prevalence of self-reported mental health levels has increased in recent years. Individuals seek to thrive and not just survive day to day. Michelle [Beulah Thornton] helps individuals set goals for future success.

Finding the right therapist

Once you’ve found a therapist who you feel comfortable with, the process usually begins with information gathering and assessment of the issues and symptoms if any.  My own approach is directive but, at the same time, supportive and encouraging. Deciding to make a change can be scary; life transitions can be difficult. But with caring support, the journey can be exciting and rewarding.

Find your inner peace.

Initial sessions

The initial sessions are when we work together to figure out what it is you want to change. Then we go about finding ways to achieve those changes. The therapy process can be as long or as short as you need it to be. Some people need just a few sessions to get clear on a life problem they are grappling with, while others seek for a deeper processing of what is going on with their lives (present and past). There is no set number of sessions necessary for change to happen. You are in control.

I encourage clients to be open and good consumers of their own mental health. You are welcome to let me know if there is something you want that you are not getting from the therapy process. The relationship between therapist and client works more smoothly when the process is collaborative.

Therapy process

Therapy sessions are 50 minutes in length in a private space where you can feel safe. When we begin our work together, I’ll ask you to bring any questions or concerns you have about the therapy process. Our first session is more like a consultation. Meeting in person is the way we can tell if you feel comfortable with me and if we will make a good match for therapeutic work together.

Utilizing complimentary adjunctive resources, such as readings, films, exercise, nutrition, and, when necessary, medication. Referrals are made. I will also refer to other professionals, such as medical doctors and practitioners when appropriate.

Connect with me

I am more than happy to talk to any prospective client on the phone or email with questions or concerns you may have before making your first appointment.
